Geofoam project example
Car Park Darwin geofoam blocks
Lightweight EPS geofoam helped transform an open CBD car park into a landscaped public space without trucking tonnes of soil into Darwin city.
Foam Technologies supplied geofoam blocks as lightweight fill so the project could build the required landscape profile with much lower dead load.
Project overview
Lightweight fill for a CBD landscape conversion
The project needed a practical way to build a landscaped embankment without heavy truck movements and excess load.
The redevelopment of a public space, once an open car park in Darwin CBD, was turned into a green landscaped area using Geofoam Blocks supplied by Foam Technologies.
The challenge was how to create the landscaped embankment without moving tonnes of soil into the city centre. Geofoam provided a lightweight infill medium around 50 times lighter than conventional fill materials.
Benefits
Why geofoam was the right fill material
Load reduction
Geofoam adds far less load to the substrate below while creating stable fill.
Lower traffic impact
Reduced truck movements helped avoid prolonged disruption in the Darwin CBD.
Faster schedules
Lightweight blocks are quicker to transport, handle and install than conventional fill.
Clean construction
EPS blocks create a tidy infill method compared with moving large volumes of soil.
Reduced labour
Blocks can be positioned and shaped on site with practical handling requirements.
Project scope
Applications
Where geofoam can help
- Slope stabilisation and lightweight embankments
- Bridge embankments and approach fills
- Landscaping mounds, green roofs and public spaces
- Retaining wall backfill with lower lateral pressure
Project supply
EPS geofoam block supply
- Material: expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam
- Use: lightweight fill and landscape shaping
- Handling: blocks can be moved and shaped on site
- Benefit: lower dead load than conventional fill materials
